The hymn of Anthony to God’s Mercy
suor Mary Melone

This month, we will focus on the figure of the saint and try to answer the question: why is mercy such a recurrent theme in his sermons? The importance of mercy is linked to the ecclesial context of his time and the evangelisation work of the Minor Friars, but also to his personal life experience. Born Fernando, Anthony first joined the Canons Regular of St. Augustine before becoming a Franciscan. He lived in the Augustinian Abbey of St. Vincent on the outskirts of Lisbon, and then had a difficult experience in the monastery of Coimbra, where he suffered greatly because of the corrupt life of the prior and some of the brothers.
