Anointed with the oil of mercy
suor Mary Melone

The Holy Year invites us to become pilgrims of hope, placing our Lord Jesus at the centre of Christian life. It is precisely this invitation to hope that makes us live the Jubilee as a privileged time to experience God’s mercy. As we know, the first Jubilee was proclaimed in 1300, later than the time in which Saint Anthony lived, and for this reason it is not mentioned in his writings. However, when Saint Anthony preached, he often called for the acceptance of God’s mercy and this is a recurring theme in his sermons with different nuances: he believes that it has its divine origin in the Father’s love realised through the Redemption of Jesus; he stresses that it is necessary for the life of Christians and that it is often mentioned in the Holy Scriptures with different images.
