Like a light in the night

Germano Bertin

I opened the last drawer of my desk: I was looking for the pen I use to write to my friends on special occasions. Moving some sheets of paper, an old note book and some little objects I noticed a half open yellowed envelope... It was very full and crumpled and it seemed that its content had been examined often. Still bent over my desk, I pick it up and begin to open it, I still cannot imagine what it contains. My mind is so concentrated on this unexpected discovery that it seems to me that every thing else has disappeared. And finally, one one by one some old pictures slip through my fingers; suddenly everything becomes present as if I have gone back to the past. I recognise myself and I recapture faces and places that almost seem to speak with their colours and perfumes: I see myself as a child, I recognise my brothers and my parents.
