The terrible suffering of the Mother

The devotion to the seven sorrows of the Virgin has a very ancient origin and St. Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373) was very devoted to her. Devotional prayers consist of meditation on the seven dolours endured by the Mother of Jesus which are often depicted in art as seven swords piercing her heart. This prayer is the contemplation of each sorrow ending with a “Hail Mary”. First sorrow: Simeon’s prophecy. During the presentation in the Temple he prophesied that the child was destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel and that a sword would pierce Mary’s soul. Hail Mary... (continue)
