In a Sermon on the parable of the Great Banquet (Luke 14,15-24) Anthony affirms that there are four kinds of sinners invited to share the joy of the banquet: “Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in here the poor and the crippled, the blind and the lame». According to Saint Anthony these four kinds of people represent those who are slaves of the vices of avarice, wrath, lust and pride: the cripple (Clausus in Latin) “who closed himself off” represents the proud who are incapable of walking on the path of humility”.

Pride is considered to be an “implosion” that blocks the way to the Kingdom: its contrary is the virtue of humility... that allows us to share the joy of the banquet! But what is the link between this interpretation of this vice and the miracle of the re-attached foot represented on the high relief? As in Saint Anthony’s words this miracle refers to a path: a severed foot, a blocked way, maybe a possible new path?... (continue)
