From gratitude to service

There are numerous voluntary associations operating around us. They bring together men and women of all ages and backgrounds who devote their lives to helping the marginalized and suffering in different environments, often quietly and with generosity and dedication. This valuable commitment is charity in action, practiced by many men and women of goodwill who are rich in concrete ideals and passionate about history. This month, we want to share a testimony from the world of volunteering concerning Dorothy Day’s life. She was brought to the attention of many when Pope Francis mentioned her in his speech to the plenary assembly of the United States Congress on 24 September 2015: “In these times when social concerns are so important, I cannot fail to mention the Servant of God Dorothy Day, who founded the Catholic Worker Movement. Her social activism, her passion for justice and for the cause of the oppressed, were inspired by the Gospel, her faith, and the example of the saints”.
