Ascension: we are made to go higher

The observance of this feast is of great antiquity, it dates back to the 4th century. The prayer of Collect of Sunday 21 May makes us understand the profound meaning of this celebration: “Our Lord, who elevated Jesus over all, open our hearts to the joy because the Ascension of your Son is already our victory. We are members of his body, he precedes us into the Father’s glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with him for ever”.

Forty days after Jesus’ resurrection his disciples saw him for the last time: “as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight” (Acts 1,9). The apostles were astonished and “While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said: ‘Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven’” (Acts 1,11)... (continue)
