Love takes no prisoners

‘Follow your heart’ encapsulates the modern idea that life, choices and relationships are often judged by the intensity of the emotions they evoke. Even marriage and family life today seem to demand a very strong emotional imprint. Yet, at the same time, spouses defend their freedom, regarding it as an indispensable element. While it may seem paradoxical to seek deep emotional involvement while also trying to protect one’s individuality and freedom, this is one of the many challenges of conjugal love and family relationships. The strong emotional component can lead one to imagine that the two lovers must lose themselves in one another, becoming one entity, not as Scripture intends, but rather like hydrogen and oxygen, which together generate a new reality. This would involve transcending one’s individuality and ‘losing oneself’ in the beloved one. However, this exaggerated view risks turning the relationship into a prison for each partner, inevitably leading to the desire to escape and destroy everything... (continue)
