A long list in service to the greater good

We have just left behind the Jubilee year dedicated to hope, and I realise that our conversations and articles often highlight pessimism and concerns about the future rather thn hope. In particular, when we talk about new technologies the tone is almost always negative, worried or even distressed. However, it is important to make a critical judgment on the opacity of algorithms and the transhumanist and anti-democratic visions of some of the ‘new masters of the steam engine’; more over and just for this, it is important to bear in mind the immense opportunities that digital technology and artificial intelligence can offer humanity. In Rerum Novarum, Leo XIII denounced the distortions created by the new economic relations of the Industrial Revolution. Yet no one can deny that the quality of life and life expectancy have increased in Western countries over the last 150 years. In his messages on health, peace, economy, education, information and evangelisation, Pope Leo XIV continues to wish and hope for a technology used for the benefit of mankind...
