The reasons for our smile

sister Anna Maria Borghi

«Let us smile and rejoice with the Blessed Virgin, for God has given us a reason to smile and rejoice: “Today the Saviour is born” [...] he who will save us. To find this joy, we are given a sign when the angel says: “his will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger”(Luke 2:12). What does it mean to say “you will find an infant” if not that wisdom is stammering, power made weak, majesty lowered, the immense is made a child, the rich are made poor, the king of angels lies in a stable, the food of angels is almost hay for animals, and the one who cannot be contained lies in a narrow manger?». In this short passage from the sermons of St. Anthony, we are drawn into the Christmas spirit, which is particularly enriched this year by the invitation to celebrate the Jubilee of the Nativity of Jesus.
