The root of Love

When we were children, our mum and dad’s embrace was our strength. We felt protected, reassured, and comforted. When tears would well up over even the slightest thing, the best remedy was that embrace, which soon brought a smile back to our faces. Growing up meant becoming more independent and capable of managing the fears and dizzying challenges that life threw at us. The strength to do so came not only from our own abilities, but also from the memory of that primal warmth and those secure arms that had given us what psychologists call “original trust.” This is an essential resource for tackling life head-on, rather than succumbing to the weight of fear and suspicion. Every relationship needs trust because we all long for a place where we feel at home and for someone to whom we can open our hearts, revealing our fears and vulnerabilities, knowing that we will still be accepted with warm, welcoming arms.
