In the Life of the Poverello of Assisi, which I, Brother Julian of Speyer, have written, I recall the sermon to the birds near Bevagna; and a little further on I add: «From then on, the man of God, upon whose lips the praise of the Saviour always dwelt, not only continued to exhort men to praise the Lord as he himself praised Him, but also the birds, the animals, and every creature, calling them brothers and sisters, and diligently began to invite them to the praise of the Creator». The exuberant love of the blessed Francis for Creation is well known: it would suffice merely to recall his famous poem, the “Cantico delle creature” (Canticle of the Creatures), which is certainly destined to endure through the centuries...
