Is the smartphone really to blame?

“It’s the smartphone’s fault. You’re always staring at the screen! Social media is ruining everything and everyone”. We hear these phrases every day at home, at school and in educational and leisure settings. While they express a genuine concern, they risk reducing a complex phenomenon to a simple and reassuring explanation by singling out the device as the sole culprit. Yet something curious happens. Often, the very adults who criticise digital device use find it hard to part with their own devices. Phones have become constant companions in work, relationships, leisure, and the management of daily life. Therefore, the use of technology does not only involve children and teenagers; it also deeply challenges the adult world, which should be the first to reflect on its own way of “inhabiting the digital space”...
