In his celebrated book The Art of Loving, Erich Fromm draws a parallel between love and work to show that loving is not a mere whim or a fleeting emotion. On the contrary, it demands commitment, responsibility, and sacrifice. Just as work does not simply serve to earn an income but to fulfil a person’s intelligence and creativity, love is not just the answer to a need, but the ultimate place for self-actualisation. Both give dignity and meaning to human existence. In another of his fundamental works, To Have or to Be?, Fromm reminds us that both work and love belong primarily to the sphere of being that is, of identity, growth, and the maturation of the self rather than that of having, which is about control, possession, and production.
