The apes in the king’s boat

fr. Luciano Bertazzo

Years ago there was a joke: the man descends from the monkeys and the monkeys... from the trees! Monkeys and apes are animals of the scientific category of primates to which we belong, and in fact many things are shared. The Italian word for monkey, “scimmia”, comes from the Greek “simòs”, which means “flat-nosed” and actually calling someone a monkey is not always a compliment. A “polyvalent” animal in its symbolic references determined by its agility in movement, but also by its “spitefulness“. Perhaps you remember the hilarious scene of the dance of King Louis in the Jungle Book animated by Walt Disney!
