The majestic stride of the lion

Is it possible that Saint Anthony saw the “king of the forest” during his brief time in Morocco? We are not sure, but the strength of this animal is often mentioned in the Bible.

Once again, we remain in the savannah: after the elephant, heavy and slow, but intelligent and sociable, let us see what the Saint says about the lion, the “king of the forest”. Another animal probably never seen firsthand by Brother Anthony (although we may have a legitimate doubt: he might have seen it during his brief time in Morocco, Africa). He certainly saw its symbolic presence in the representation of the evangelist Mark as a lion that put its paw on the book. This image was later assumed by the Republic of Venice as its distinctive sign and to highlight its domination over the conquered territories.
