The dishonest steward

This parable is really weird. Try to read it again before you go on. How does it feel to hear Jesus saying: “Make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings”? Concretely, what does that mean?

Jesus often tells very effective parables, but this one surpasses all of them: it is a story that impresses and makes us reflect; it is a parable that challenges us. It all starts with a rich entrepreneur who fires his steward, the one who took care of all his business (it was normal that these super-rich people didn’t do it personally). He calls him and says: you’re fired! It doesn’t even give him a chance to defend himself, to explain himself...
