The deer’s victorious run

fr. Luciano Bertazzo

Looking at this noble animal, the righteous and the penitent understand the importance of practicing good works

Noble in its appearance, solemn with its horns growing from year to year: the deer. It is the animal that accompanies us this month, with what friar Antonio can tell us about it. The deer symbolically expresses solemnity and dignity with its gait, always alerted to seize any dangers. We often find it in the Nordic iconography connected to the legendary story of Saint Hubert, who would have converted from a dissolute life when, in the thick of a forest, during a hunt he would have met with a majestic deer that carried a bright cross between its horns. And for this reason he is invoked as the patron saint of hunters.
